Namibia in August – prices, weather, activities & more

Namibia in August

Namibia in August is a fantastic time to visit! It’s the fourth month of the dry season and the mild temperatures make it ideal for safaris, hiking and desert adventures. Even though it gets chilly at night, the mornings warm up quickly, setting the stage for a day of exploration. Dry landscapes lead to high concentrations of wildlife around water sources in Namibia’s parks, creating one of the best times for wildlife sightings.

However, this is peak season and prices are higher. We advise to book up to one year in advance. Discover more below.

Weather in Namibia in August – why it is an excellent time to visit

Nestled between South Africa and Angola on Africa’s west coast, Namibia is a land of extremes. With significant regional climate variations, it is crucial to plan your visit carefully.

August is a great month to explore the Namib and Kalahari Deserts. Due to lower temperatures, visitors can comfortably enjoy a variety of activities, such as hiking in stunning landscapes and discovering the region’s people, culture, rock art, history, fauna, and flora.

August is also the fourth consecutive month without rain. The dry landscapes of the national parks mean that wildlife tends to congregate around permanent water sources, making game viewing easier. This makes it one of the best times to visit if you’re eager to witness a wide variety of wildlife.

So, if you’re seeking an adventure amidst stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife while enjoying good weather, Namibia is the place to be in August!

Which are the best places to visit in Namibia in August?

The Namib Desert

August is the perfect time to explore the Namib Desert while enjoying mild temperatures. This ancient desert, estimated to be between 55 and 80 million years old, is a true natural wonder. Not only is it one of the oldest deserts in the world, but it is also one of the driest, receiving only 2mm of rain. It is also home to extraordinary desert-adapted wildlife and flora adapted to survive off moisture-laden air brought inland by thick sea fog.

Stretching along the entire coastline, the Namib Desert offers a wealth of stunning destinations to explore, all protected by numerous national parks. Additionally, unique activities such as sandboarding, balloon safari at dawn, hiking, and camping under a star-filled sky allow you to experience the desert and create lasting memories.

August is an incredible time to visit Etosha National Park in the north! You can witness abundant wildlife, from the majestic herds of elephants adorned in white clay to the numerous rhinos, predators, and prey, all set against the stunning backdrop of the enormous dry salt pan. Visible from space, the pan is typically dry but transforms into a shallow lake during the wet season, creating a breathtaking sight.

In August, you can explore Etosha’s waterholes scattered across the dry landscape, which teem with birds and animals at this time of year. These waterholes play a crucial role. They are sustained by underground reservoirs, making them essential for the survival of all life in the park. Come and experience the wildlife of Etosha National Park in August!

Experience the thrill of sandboarding and quad biking or join guided tours to discover the unique desert-adapted plants and wildlife, including the fascinating ‘Little Five’ – the web-footed gecko, Namaqua chameleon, Peringuey’s or sidewinding adder, dancing white lady spider, and shovel-snouted lizard.

What to do in Namibia in August? Activities

Is August a good time to go on safari?

August marks the midpoint of the dry season, making it an excellent time for a safari in Namibia. Game drives near waterholes and rivers offer thrilling wildlife sightings. This is particularly true when visiting Damaraland and Etosha National Park in conjunction with the Zambezi Region (Caprivi Strip).

There are several ways to enjoy a safari in Namibia. One popular option is a self-drive safari, thanks to the numerous rental companies, well-maintained roads, campsites, and excellent accommodations. Moreover, with just over three million people in a country 2.3 times the size of Germany, you won’t encounter much traffic.

There is also a network of gravel roads, so there is a slightly higher likelihood of getting a puncture, so basic mechanical skills such as changing tyres is essential. However, if you book with Namibia-Experience, we will give you a thorough briefing to prepare you for your journey.

If you want to avoid the long drives between parks, a guided group or private safari could be for you. Our group safaris offer the opportunity to join a small group of like-minded people on scheduled itineraries throughout the year, perfect for solo travellers, young couples, or friends. Alternatively, you can choose your own dates, destinations, and companions on a private safari, which is ideal for romantic couples and families.

Other things to consider

When you book your safari with us, Namibia-Experience, a country expert will suggest various types of accommodations to suit your preferences and budget. However, it’s important to note the difference between staying inside and outside national parks.

In parks such as Etosha National Park, the accommodations are state-owned, unlike the privately owned accommodations located just outside the park’s perimeter. Accommodation inside the park can feel basic compared to the charming privately owned places to stay.

However, they are usually situated near waterholes, which are lit up during the evening, allowing visitors to watch the wildlife come and go from the comfort of their camp, which is the highlight.

This situation varies depending on the park. For example, inside the Namib Naukluft National Park, there is a mixture of private and state-owned accommodations with varying standards. Share your preferences with one of our Travel Experts, and they will bring your dream safari to life.
