Brigitte und Wolf-Reiner Neumann | Guided Photo Safari
‘In April, we toured with our Guide Juan Proll and had ample time to explore and take photos. He understood how to position us at spots so that we were the only people there and we could take photos to our heart’s content. We returned with excellent photos and tips. This trip was an enormous success, and we would like to do it again.’

WHERE TO EXPERIENCE IT

NAMIBIA IS A LAND OF COLOUR WHERE NO FILTERS ARE NEEDED

In the south, explore the Fish River Canyon, the world’s second-largest canyon, and then capture the towering ochre dunes of Sossusvlei in Namib-Naukluft National Park.

At the coast, visit the eccentric ghost town of Kolmanskop near Luderitz and observe desert-adapted wildlife and unique fairy circles in Swakopmund.

In the north, marvel at Damaraland’s otherworldly landscapes, home to desert elephants; experience Etosha National Park’s wildlife; and conclude your journey by photographing rainbows over Victoria Falls.

When to go

Namibia is a year-round destination for photo safaris, but two seasons will influence your experience.

The best time for wildlife photography is the dry season. The scarcity of water means the wildlife congregates near permanent water sources, providing you with a greater chance of encountering more species.

Superb landscape photography can be achieved throughout the year; however, the colours are particularly vivid during the rainy season.

May to OctoberThe best time for wildlife photography

The dry season is the perfect time to visit Namibia because of its mild temperatures, which make exploration more comfortable. However, it is also the peak season, leading to high prices and low availability, so booking early is advisable.

Despite the season’s popularity, wildlife photographers can still capture images without other people in the frame by travelling to Zambezi Region’s remote parks.

This sparsely populated country ensures ample opportunities for people-free landscape photography, irrespective of the high season.

November to AprilThe ideal period for landscape photography

It is the hottest time of year, with very high daytime temperatures; therefore, it is important to schedule your excursions for the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. It’s also the low season, and some accommodations are closed.

The entire coastline is part of the Namib Desert, one of the world’s driest deserts; therefore, it is unlikely to rain.

The chance of rain is greater in the northeast, particularly between January to March when the highest rainfall typically occurs.

What to see on photo safaris in Namibia

Our expert local guides will be your gateway to capturing stunning photographs.

When you arrive at your destinations, you’ll explore on foot with your guide, who will get you to the right place at the right time. While in National Parks with wildlife, your guide will position your vehicle in the optimal spot. In both cases, you can decide to wait or move on, enhancing your chances of capturing the images you’ve always dreamed of.

If you enjoy photographing wildlife at eye level during the golden hour, we are here to help.

On guided walks, you’ll capture the wildlife from ground level, while on a boat safari, you can photograph every creature that comes to the river’s edge.

Alternatively, you can wait for that once-in-a-lifetime wildlife shot in carefully positioned hides at select accommodations.

If landscapes ignite your passion, we can advise you on when the desert flowers bloom, where to capture a scene of thick ocean fog rolling over the desert, and where rock arches create dramatic vistas.

If you draw inspiration from people and history, we can take you to colonial-era towns to see quirky architecture, or visit ancient rock art sites, or introduce you to the San Bushmen.

Alternatively, we can connect you with Astro Guides to capture the night sky.

Best places for photography in Namibia

Book with us, and we will guide you to Namibia’s iconic destinations.

A vast canyon, a giant’s playground and a Quiver tree forest

On a photo tour of Namibia, a journey to the south will delight landscape photographers.

One of the furthest destinations is the Fish River Canyon, second in size to the Grand Canyon; however, the scenery here is spectacular and well worth a visit.

During your journey, you can explore the captivating Kalahari Desert, then stop near Keetmanshoop to discover the Quiver Tree Forest and the Giant’s Playground—a perfect location for time-lapse night sky photography

Dunes, camel thorn trees and fairy circles

At Namib-Naukluft National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will visit Sossusvlei to photograph the towering ochre dunes, the tallest of which rises to over 300 metres.

As you enter the park, visiting Sesriem Canyon offers unique photographic opportunities. Here, you will discover a gorge 30m high and only 2m wide in places.

Overnighting inside the park lets you ascend the dunes in time to capture the sunrise and witness how long shadows create dramatic visuals. You can enhance this photographic experience by drifting silently over the dunes on a hot-air balloon flight to capture the awakening scene from above – a magical experience.

Further into the park, Deadvlei, a clay pan with scarecrow-like 700-year-old Camel Thorn trees, is a dream destination.

The contrasting colours of the white clay pan, the dark skeletal trees, and the twisting rust-coloured dunes towering in the distance create iconic images.

Another photo opportunity arises with the fairy circles—rings of grass completely bare in the centre, scattered in patterns—about which science still lacks a definitive answer regarding their cause.

Coastal towns, Atlantic Ocean wildlife, and diamond-rush towns consumed by the desert

Two coastal towns will delight cultural, urban, and wildlife photographers: Lüderitz and Swakopmund.

In the southern Lüderitz, you’ll discover ornate German colonial-era architecture amidst the desert. If that weren’t surreal enough, you could visit Kolmanskop to photograph an abandoned diamond rush town being consumed by the desert or even the area’s wild horses.

Swakopmund, located on the central coastline, offers more art nouveau German architecture and is the gateway to the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean.

On a catamaran tour, you can photograph ocean wildlife or observe the ‘Little Five’ on a desert tour.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be excited by the desert’s side-winding snakes, fog-catching beetles, camouflage chameleons, and the Ocean’s Cape Fur seal colonies, breaching whales, and playful dolphins.

Desert rhinos, inspiring landscapes, and ancient rock art

The landscapes of Damaraland are exceptional, and you’ll want to stop at every turn to photograph them.

Spitzkoppe is a peaked rock formation in the south home to rock arches and remarkable geology. It creates a stunning landscape for both daytime and nighttime photography.

Further north lies Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to rock engravings or petroglyphs that are significant to the area’s ancient history.

As if all that weren’t enough, the dry riverbeds in this region are picturesque and inhabited by desert-adapted elephants and rhinos.

Ghostly elephants, life-giving waterholes, and lush landscapes

The world-renowned Etosha National Park is an exceptional wildlife photography destination.

Mud baths and the dusting in the clay-coloured soil turn elephants a striking white, earning them the nickname “the ghosts of Etosha.”

Landscape and bird photographers will relish the rainy season when the pan fills and transforms into an enormous lake. The lush grasslands provide a nursery for the region’s herbivores, and numerous species of birds flock here.

Further northeast, several national parks in the Caprivi Region are perfect for wildlife photography.

Boat safari and moonlight rainbows

Travelling through Namibia with us allows you to cross into Botswana to photograph the abundant wildlife in Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta.

Embark on a boat safari or glide across the water in a traditional mokoro (a type of canoe) propelled by a local guide who poles through these beautiful ecosystems.

Conclude your adventure at Victoria Falls, where, during the full moon, you can photograph rainbows created by the moonlight reflecting off the waterfall’s spray.

Equipment and facilities for a Namibia photo tour

Our vehicles, driven by expert local guides, are the ideal companions for your Namibia photo safari. Charging points ensure you won’t experience a flat battery, fridges offer cool drinks, and the roof hatch provides unobstructed views.

Most excursions take place in the early morning or late afternoon. Consequently, you’ll enjoy your accommodation’s facilities during the heat of the day, allowing you time to download your photographs.

Regardless of your equipment, you can join our photo tour. You can bring a smartphone, a simple camera, or multiple camera bodies and lenses. What we all share is the joy of photography.

Namibian tours are dusty, so packing your equipment in well-sealed bags is essential.

How to plan a photography safari

The simplest way to plan a photo safari in Namibia is to read some of our tours, which will help you discover various routes that will take you to Namibia’s iconic destinations.

If you find a tour you like but wish to add another destination, that is entirely possible. Alternatively, you may start afresh and design your tour based on your photography goals.

Next, you may wish to read our guide on the best times to visit Namibia. You can then contact one of our travel experts to start tailoring your experience.

Once you’ve booked your photo tour, we’ll email you several guides to help you prepare.

We’ll be there for you from your inquiry until you return home.

Choose the right season for you

Each season possesses distinctive characteristics that affect the style of photography.

The dry season is perfect for all forms of photography, particularly wildlife photography. If you don’t mind hot temperatures, landscape and night-sky photographers might favour the rainy season for its dust-free skies, blooming deserts, and verdant landscapes.
