Day 1 | Windhoek

Windhoek

Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Windhoek and your city tour may begin. Windhoek is still very young compared to other capital cities, but despite its youthfulness, it has plenty of stories to tell. On this tour you will learn about Windhoek’s past, its present and its many contrasts. Quite soon you will notice that the remnants of Windhoek’s past, are still clear to be seen in the city’s colonial architecture. The Old Fort (Alte Feste), Christ Church, House of Parliament (Tintenpalast) and Railway Station are all testament to this. You can even catch a sight of the city’s three romantic, medieval-styled castles, very unique for a city in Africa.

As you wind through the streets, your guide will acquaint you not only with Windhoek’s history, but also familiarise you with regards to daily life in the city. By far Namibia’s largest city (and perhaps its only one), Windhoek is the heart of the country. Once on the main street, now called Independence Avenue, you can begin to see another side to Windhoek. The commercial centre has a modern feel, flanked by taxis, contemporary stores and business people going about their day.

As you make your approach to Katutura, you will learn more about how difficult life was for the majority of the population before democracy and independence came to Namibia. This lends to a better understanding to your visit. Katutura is the township to which the residents of the Old Location were forcefully resettled to during the 1950s. Today, it is still home to many of Windhoek’s poorer population. Despite the poverty, the township has a vibrant energy, which you are sure to feel as you make your way through the streets. Time permitting, you can even visit one of the local markets.

Once your tour winds down and you start to head back to your accommodation, you will notice that today you have gained a better appreciation for Windhoek and for its people.
